Gluten Free, Dairy Free, Soy Free

All the flavor of apple pie with less effort, this easy recipe has a gooey fresh apple filling that is brimming with warm fall spices. Then, it is sprinkled with an irresistible crisp topping made from rolled oats, sugar, chopped walnuts, cinnamon and nutmeg. This treat is so delicious, you'd never guess it's gluten and dairy free!!

Why I Love This Recipe

This easy recipe is a bowl full of warm autumn comfort!! As they bake, the fresh apples become tender and develop a gooey, caramelly syrup around them. Then, the sprinkle of sweet, toasty homemade crisp topping gives a deliciously crunchy contrast.

Gluten Free Apple Crisp is the perfect recipe when you're craving apple pie, but don't have the time or energy to make one. This easy, peasy dessert is oven ready in only 15-minutes!

The simple fruit filling takes about 10 minutes to make and gets poured into a buttered dish. Then, another 5 minutes goes into making the crisp that is sprinkled over the fruit filling. All that's left is to bake until gooey, bubbly, golden perfection and eat!

What types of apples work best

Pink Lady, Braeburn, Honey Crisp, Jonathan, or Granny Smith apples are good choices to use in Gluten Free Apple Crisp. These varieties hold their shape well without becoming mushy.

Tips for making the topping

When making the crisp topping, use your hand or a pastry cutter to get all flour and oats in contact with the dairy free butter.

The addition of rolled oats and walnuts makes this topping a crunchy textured crisp topping instead of a crumble.

Let's Talk Sugar

This is the brand of maple sugar I prefer. It doesn’t clump as badly as some others I have tried. Because maple sugar is light in color, I prefer using it in the topping to keep that beautiful, golden brown color.

However, maple sugar is expensive. Because of the affordability of coconut sugar, I try to use it in any recipe that won’t be visually impacted by the darker coloring. If you don’t have a problem with a darker topping, feel free to use only coconut sugar in this recipe.

Or, if you don’t have any issues with white table sugar, you can also use it. Since maple sugar is sweeter than table sugar, you may need to increase the measurement by ¼ cup of white table sugar to achieve the same level of sweetness.

Equipment

  • 1 8x8 baking dish
  • measuring cups and spoons
  • 1 vegetable peeler
  • 1 pastry cutter optional

Ingredients

Crisp Topping

  • ¾ cup sugar*
  • ½ cup brown rice flour
  • ¼ cup almond flour
  • ½ teaspoon cinnamon
  • 2 pinches nutmeg
  • 1 pinch salt
  • 5 tablespoon dairy free butter cold, cut in small cubes
  • 3 tablespoon gluten free rolled oats
  • ½ cup walnuts chopped

Fruit Filling

  • ¾ cup sugar*
  • 2 tablespoon brown rice flour
  • 1 teaspoon cinnamon
  • ¼ teaspoon salt
  • ⅛ teaspoon nutmeg
  • 6 medium apples** peeled and diced
  • 3 tablespoon dairy free butter cold, cut in small cubes

Instructions

  • Preheat oven to 350℉ and grease an 8x8 casserole dish or deep pie dish with butter.

Make the Crisp

  • In a medium mixing bowl add sugar, brown rice flour, almond flour, cinnamon, nutmeg, and salt. Whisk together.
  • Add cubed butter. Using either a pastry cutter or your hand, cut in butter until a coarse crumb forms. You want all of the ingredients to come in contact with the butter. I like to squeeze it together with my hands to achieve this.
  • Add the rolled oats. Squeeze the mixture until moist clumps form.
Flour, butter, spices, sugar, and oats mixed together in a mixing bowl.
  • Add the chopped walnuts and squeeze a few additional times to incorporate them. The mixture should still resemble moist clumps.

Make the Apple Filling

  • In a large mixing bowl add sugar, brown rice flour, cinnamon, salt, and nutmeg. Whisk together.
  • Peel and dice apples about ¼" dice.
Diced apples in a mixing bowl next to apple seasoning in a mixing bowl.
  • Add apples to sugar, flour, and spices mixture. Use a spatula and stir until the apples are evenly coated.

Assemble the Apple Crisp

  • Pour apple mixture into the greased baking dish and spread out evenly.
  • Place cubed butter evenly on top of apple mixture.
  • Sprinkle evenly with crisp mixture.

Bake

  • Place in preheated oven and bake 45 minutes until golden and bubbly. Allow to cool 10 minutes and enjoy!

Notes

*Feel free to use light brown sugar or cane sugar if you prefer. I've noticed cane sugar doesn't sit well with my family, so I typically use maple sugar or coconut sugar. All maple sugar is pricy, but this version doesn't clump as badly as other brands I have tried. I typically use it in lighter colored baked goods (vanilla cakes, lemon baked goods, streusel/crumble/crisp toppings etc). That said, I use coconut sugar more often due to affordability. It darkens then end product, but if it's just my family eating it we don't mind!!
