Romans: 8:26-30 NIV
In the same way, the Spirit helps us in our weakness. We do not know what we ought to pray for, but the Spirit himself intercedes for us through wordless groans. And he who searches our hearts knows the mind of the Spirit, because the Spirit intercedes for God’s people in accordance with the will of God. And we know that in all things God works for the good of those who love him, who have been called according to his purpose. For those God foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, that he might be the firstborn among many brothers and sisters. And those he predestined, he also called; those he called, he also justified; those he justified, he also glorified.
Do you ever feel alone in your struggles? Many of us come from dysfunctional families, either physically given up or cared for very poorly, maybe even harshly. These families often do not have the emotional capacity to navigate their lives well, much less the ability to come alongside and bear the burdens of the next generation. We have been broken in so many ways we feel unable to maintain healthy relationships with friends, children, or spouses. So, when disaster inevitably strikes in our lives, we feel alone. In every sense of the word, we feel deeply alone. There is no one who can or is willing to bear the immeasurable weight of our burden alongside us.
I have been there many times and know this anguish of loneliness in life’s struggles. The good news is when we feel extreme helplessness, where no one will see or hear our anguish, God’s Spirit cries out to bring ours near to His. Romans 8 says He fervently desires to come alongside us in life’s hardships. Because of this, He doesn’t wait for us to ask for the help we need. God searches our hearts when we do not know what we ought to pray for (v26) and intercedes for us in our weakness…through wordless groans (v26). He is with us, feeling our suffering alongside us. The Lord is working all things for the good (v28) as we submit our life choices to His truth and will as He reveals it to us.
Are you in this spot today? You are His child. In His love for you, He deeply desires to help you. Because of this, He will make a way. Not a hidden way. Probably not an easy way, but a way that will work all things for the good of those who love Him, who have been called according to His purpose (v28). This means doing it the way He designed, in line with His perfect character and not our fallen desires. Cling to Him, open your heart and mind to the next right steps He’s got for you.
