Why I Love This Recipe
Healthy, whole food taco night doesn't get easier than this Ground Beef Taco Meat recipe! Made with common pantry ingredients, this flavor packed dish comes together in only 25 minutes.
Like many of my DIY recipes, this taco seasoning was created after noticing a lot prepackaged taco seasoning contained less than desirable ingredients. Specifically, our previous favorite store bought brand's first ingredient is maltodextrin!! I can see having under the less than 2% section on the ingredient list, but the first ingredient, come on!
Furthermore, most store brought brands contained other additives or soy, things we were trying to avoid. I did find a couple of brands that had healthier ingredients, but we didn't like the flavor. Thus, this homemade Ground Beef Taco Meat was born!
With only 6g carbs/4g net carbs and made with gluten free, paleo and Whole30 compliant ingredients, you can feel good serving this to your whole family! It's brimming with bold, earthy Mexican flavors and tastes just as delicious with ground turkey or chicken.
Cooking Tips
Sautéing the spices until fragrant helps to release their oils to draw out the fullness of their flavors. It’s a simple step that has a big impact on the depth of flavor in this dish.
Moreover, toasting tomato paste is another simple way to deepen the flavor of this dish. Cooking tomato paste until it turns deeper red helps to caramelize the sugars and intensifies the flavor.
Serving suggestions
Whole30: on top of a bed of lettuce, cauliflower rice, baked or roasted white or sweet potatoes, or Seasoned Red Potato Wedges. Top with jarred jalapeños, black olives, pico de gallo, salsa, or guacamole.
Paleo: any of the above options or on paleo compliant tortilla wraps. Siete makes my son's favorite tortillas. They also make paleo tortilla chips.
Gluten Free: any of the above options or on rice, tortilla chips, potato tots or sweet potato tots, french fries or sweet potato fries. You could also top with dairy free shredded cheese.
Low Carb: on top of cauliflower rice, a bed of lettuce, lettuce wraps, or low carb tortilla wraps (if you’re not avoiding gluten) and topped with shredded cheese.
