Why I Love This Recipe
My husband and I love Cajun inspired recipes, however we were having a hard time finding a spice blend that wasn't too spicy for our son. This lead me to researching the flavor profile of Cajun seasoning and creating this milder kid-friendly version!
This easy recipe contains all the depth of flavor of traditional restaurant Cajun seasoning (and is more delicious than store bought) without the mouth burning heat! However, the spiciness can easily be adjusted to your liking. See Cooking Tips below.
Smoky paprika shines in this Cajun Seasoning and is complimented by earthy garlic and onion powder. Moreover, black pepper, chili powder, and a hint of cayenne add mild spice that is nicely rounded out by peppery oregano, citrusy coriander, herbal thyme, and sweet basil.
Additionally, this Cajun Seasoning is more herbaceous in flavor and can be used interchangeably for Creole seasoning. This quick spice blend is perfect for seafood, chicken, pasta, vegetables, and soups.
Making this recipe spicier
If you prefer a spicier version of this homemade blend, add an additional 1-2 teaspoon cayenne.
Making this recipe low sodium
Additionally, you can easily tailor this to suit a low sodium diet. Remove the salt from this blend when you mix it. Then, add salt to suit your diet when you prepare you favorite Cajun/Creole dishes!
Storage Tips
Furthermore, spice blends last a long time in storage! Store Homemade Cajun Seasoning in an airtight container away from heat and light. It will stay fresh for up to 6 months. Be sure to add the date to the label.
Moreover, you can either buy spice jars or use plastic storage bags to store this recipe. However, I prefer to repurpose my emptied spice containers. For this seasoning blend, I used an empty chili powder jar. Then, if the label is easy to remove feel free to do that and add your own. I typically use a cut out a rectangle of paper or a sticky note taped over the old label of the spice jar. Good for your wallet and the environment!
