Why I Love This Recipe

Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice is a quick and easy DIY seasoning that takes only 5 minutes to make. Plus, it's made from spices you likely already have in your pantry: cinnamon, ground ginger, allspice, and nutmeg.

Additionally, homemade spice blends can have a fresher more vibrant taste. I think this is especially true with seasonal spices like this one. How long has that pumpkin pie spice been sitting on the rack before you brought it home? DIY spice blends have the awesome bonus of being made fresh when you need to make a recipe!

Customize to suit your palette

This festive fall recipe, when made from scratch, is easily customizable. Pumpkin pie spice is often made from a combination of cinnamon, ginger, allspice, nutmeg and/or clove.

I am not a fan of the bitter astringent notes in cloves, so I opted to leave it out. Instead, I use a little more allspice which has less of an astringent kick and more of a sweet-smoky flavor. That being said, customize away with this recipe. Try it as it, then change up the ratios to suit your palette!

Storage tips

Spice blends last a long time in storage! You can store this Homemade Pumpkin Pie Spice in an airtight container away from heat and light. It will stay fresh for up to 6 months. Be sure to add the date to the label.

You can buy spice jars or use plastic storage bags. However, I prefer to repurpose my emptied spice containers. For this seasoning blend, you could use an empty cinnamon or nutmeg jar. Then, if the label is easy to remove feel free to do that and add your own. I typically use a cut out a rectangle of paper or a sticky note taped over the old label of the spice jar. Good for your wallet and the environment, win-win!
